Overview
|
The Evolution & Ecology Graduate School Preview program is a free, online program that includes live workshops, asynchronous materials, and access to mentorship. We cover material including graduate school experience, application timeline, finding and contacting potential advisors, writing research and diversity statements, and identifying if graduate school may be a good fit for your needs and career goals.
In addition to our live program, our website always includes the videos from our 2021 sessions. These videos contain the information we cover in the program, and are always freely available. We hope you find the information in them helpful. Brief descriptions of each videos are below, and the videos can be found via the menu at the top of the webpage. |

How do I apply to graduate school?
|
How to Apply & TimelineThe process of applying to ecology and evolution graduate programs often differs from most university applications because applicants are expected to make connections with potential faculty advisors. In this session, we cover how to be successful at each step of the application process, from contacting potential advisors to your written application to your in person visit (and everything in between).
Facilitators: Danielle De La Pascua & Sivan Yair |
How do I acquire funding for my salary and my research?
|
Funding & Grant WritingThis part of the series provides an overview of how students get salaries and funding for their research projects, networking opportunities, and other activities. Oftentimes a student’s financial stability depends on the program and lab they are in, so we cover what to look out for when deciding among them. We also provide more detail on how to apply for fellowship opportunities that can be offered before you enter a graduate program, or within your first two years as a graduate student.
Facilitators: Elise Elwood, Darien Satterfield & Madison Armstrong |
How do I find the right program, lab, and advisor?
|
Finding a Good FitIn the first part of this session, we talk about how you can identify an advisor, program, and research area that’s right for you. In the second part, we connect with some faculty in the Evolution and Ecology department at UC Davis. They give flash talks about themselves and the work that they do, and participants ask them any questions.

Is this Right for Me?We discuss the various career opportunities that a degree in ecology and evolution can provide and ways in which a masters or PhD could be a better fit for someone. This session provides an opportunity for you to reflect on your needs, values, and interests as you evaluate whether graduate school lies on the path toward your career goals.
